The story · Chapter 3 of 5
1920–1933: George Berg Soft Drinks
In 1920 Prohibition arrived and the sign changed. The bar reopened as George Berg Soft Drinks and sold root beer over the counter. The root beer was sometimes improved. Three-two beer, near beer, or a bottle of corn whisky kept under the bar went into the mug, depending on who was asking and who was watching. Guests were entertained upstairs. Northern Wisconsin was busy country in those years. No source puts a famous name at this bar, and we are not going to. The important part is what did not happen: it never closed. Not in 1920, not in the thirteen years after. Draft root beer is still on the taps today, poured into an iced mug. It is a straight line from the workaround to the present.
